Spanish

¡Bienvenidos! – WELCOME

Program Information

Are you interested in learning the language spoken by 50 million people in the United States, the fastest-growing minority, and by over 330 million people in 20 countries? Spanish is the fourth most spoken language in the world, and it is spoken in Spain, Central America, South America, and parts of the Caribbean, the United States, and the Philippines, to name a few.

Our faculty come from a variety of Spanish-speaking countries, including Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Spain, all of whom are native speakers of Spanish, and who bring first-hand cultural knowledge and experiences that enhance our program and the learning experiences for our students. We also have stellar faculty for whom Spanish is their second language, and who are able to teach students from that perspective.

The Spanish Program at WSU provides students with a proficiency-oriented curriculum where they are encouraged to use Spanish from day one. We have a variety of course offerings that feature culture, film, literature, and various professions, such as medical, business, veterinary medicine, education, law enforcement, and translation/interpretation services.

Our undergraduate program gives students the opportunity to earn a degree (or additional major) in Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages & Cultures-Spanish General, and Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages & Cultures-Spanish Secondary.  The Spanish Professions major is an additional major only.

Study Abroad

For the last several years, we have been offering a faculty-led study abroad program to Guatemala (and more recently Ecuador) with the Hearts in Motion program.  For additional information on Hearts in motion, please contact Professor Sonia Lopez-Lopez.  Check our website here to see other  faculty-led programs that are being offered each year by the SLCR.

There are many other study abroad opportunities for students in the Spanish program, including countries such as Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Spain.  These study abroad programs are offered through the International Programs Study Abroad Programs. We encourage our students to pursue international study opportunities in programs all over the world, and accept up to 18 transferred credits, depending on the length of the study abroad stay, and whether it is a minor or major program that is being pursued.
